I found a sharpening stone

in my toolbox. Been there for years. Remembered that chefs say they always sharpen their kitchen knives after every time they use them, before putting them away. My edging shears were getting blunt, so gave this a try.
Laying them open across a thick cloth on my back bumper I rubbed the sharpening stone on the sloping side of each blade and counted 20 times. Some black bits came off, suppose it was dead grass, and the blades looked cleaner.
Anyway, it definitely made a difference.
Will do the hand shears, and remember to keep to this drill in future, instead of just wiping them and putting them away.

It's a good idea to take care of your tools.

Thanks Bloomer, it just takes a few minutes, best to keep the sharpening stone with the tools. Saves money paying to have them sharpened in the Spring.

We still have a knife grinder come around every year with his little cart, but he is very expensive now £25 for 3 knives a pair of secateurs and scissors that was 2 years ago, so I stopped using him. I have a sharpening stone buy not used it with any success. Any tips Diane?

Hubby has one in his shed but I can`t work it right, I`ve tried to use it but afraid I make mine worse, my carving knife I sharpen on the doorstep, lol, grandads way from many moons ago, I worked in a butchers and know how to use the proper tool but have more success on the step, however that does not work on my shears and scissors..

I havent actually been taught. Just rubbed the sharpening stone on the sloping side of the blade, one way, towards the sharp edge. Seemed logical.
Our local lawnmower engineer sharpens scissors.
Strange how there has never been a commercial sharpener on the market for secateurs ? I have one for kitchen knives, got it from Betterwear.
