Receiving a bunch of Roses

that had been packed closely in a crate = made it difficult
to seperate them in a vase. I cut off an inch of the stems
to shorten them.
Then I tried the old Tulip trick and dropped two copper coins into the vase.
Next morning they were all seperated out equally distant from each other, and looking beautiful.
How does it happen ? Are other flowers affected in the same way ?

Fascinating. Diane, heard of lemonade, even aspirin being used.....maybe the copper is a chemical reaction?......

the cutting off the base lets the stem take up water so they have a better chance of staying 'straight'. the copper possibly acts as a chemical agent/fungicide etc. so prevents them dying due to unseen infections.

Don't know how it happens but my tulips are up and I will try it and drop a penny or two in the vase to see if they stand up straight. If they do I might try dropping in a dollar bill to see if they will dance for me:)
