ok Doddy, considering not much cash and you want really low maintaintence
this is what I would do, Gravel both squares and as and when you have spare cash you can buy a plant/shrub and add to the gravel garden, slowly building it up, keep the larger plants at the back working down to the smaller ones at the front, dont put them in lines or around the edge, it looks more interesting if you "place them" thinking about colour and form and how they would look next to each other. When planting clear away the gravel to expose the weed suppressor, cut a cross into it, fold back the sides and dig out a hole, you will need to add some fresh compost before adding the plant, put the weed suppressor back and cover again with gravel, water well and enjoy. Maybe some of your neighbours if dividing plants in the autumn, they would be willing to share them with you! When you have decided what to do, the guys here on GoY will be only too pleased to help with suggestions of plants if you need help with that aswell... hope this helps and I haven't misunderstood.

Your welcome! If you like the colour of the fence, then keep it.. the pink edging you could disguise with plants (Ground cover plants) these would grow over and hide the edging, if you paint it the weather will will get in and the paint will start to come off, then it will look awful...

Good luck with your garden Doddy. It doesn't look like too much hard work, although with your injury you need to take it easy. I bet it looks lovely when you have a few plants in and get your fence painted. Look forward to seeing the "after" pics and hope your ribs are better soon....:o)
