I have Sweet violets, Viola odarata. It is an evergreen perennial and flowers in early Spring. It self seed and is very pretty. Ordinary Violas or Pansies you can buy anywhere would do the job.

Could try some stones around the base, not so pretty as lindas suggestion but cheap until you get something else

Have you been watering them? The weather is so dry and newly planted plants can suffer under direct sunlight. Remember, although clematis like a sunny position they like their roots kept cool. Low lying plants at the foot of the Clematis can create shade.
