A Very Happy New Year to you All.

My apologies for not wishing everyone a happy 2016 but we have had my ex-evacuee (WW2) staying with us for three weeks and we have been out a lot. She went home yesterday

Anyone here been an evacuee, or had an evacuee for the duration of the war? We had quite a few in our village and the schoolyard echoed to the cries of “English pigs!” and “Welsh rabbits” until we got to know one another.

Happy times in spite of the war!

Happy New Year Eirlys :)

I don't remember the war. It was over a few years before I was born. However, there were still rations, and I've got a little ration book with my name on it ...

Yes, rationing went on for ages. I still have my old identity card!

Fortunately I wasn't born for sometime after the war. but my mum and her father took in 2 evacuees so I've heard lots of stories about them.

Rationing didn't end until 1953 I was told this morning. Can't recall that but things were a lot easier by then.

My father grew tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce and grapes, which we sold and a few peaches and melons for the family.

Gardens were turned over to vegetable growing and we kept a pig called Pamela.

My Mother her brother and their Mother (my Grandmother) were evacuees from London, because of the bombing they moved to the countryside in Worcestershire, whilst my Grandfather risked his life staying in London to work! my grandparents had a large farm house and so they had several evacuees living there also, who helped on the farm, my Mother eventually married the son of the house, who became a butcher and farmer.....
I remember as a child people coming to my Fathers shop, with their ration books, we also grew vegetables, reared rabbits to eat and the odd goose and chickens, seems like an age ago now!! but we never went hungry, there was a lot of black market stuff available too!!
