This unique museum is located in the former St. Mary's Church, Lambeth. I knew that the museum itself was closed for refurbishment, not due to re-open until November. I was, however, led to believe that its garden was open daily. This was not the case, however, when I got there. The garden gate was padlocked! The museum garden, being an old churchyard in reality, contains the burial places of the John Tradescants (father and son), the 17th century planthunters. John Tradescant the Elder was Head gardener to King Charles 1 of England. Of course, we all now know of the plant genus Tradescantia, introduced by them over 400 years ago. Incidentally, this garden is also the burial place of William Bligh, Captain of the ill-fated ship "Bounty", of mutiny fame.
