Strelitzia Nicolai (Strelitzia nicolai (Giant Bird of Paradise))

Such a shame that this wasn't in full bloom yet as Sue still hasn't seen one of these in flower.

This is not Strelitzia nicolai - Giant-bird-of-paradise. It's Ravenala madagascariensis - Traveler's Palm (It's not a true palm). They are however, very closely related. One big difference is S. nicolai has black flower bracts...also the leaves are not as large as Traveler's palm.

Also, Traveler's Palm is native to Madagascar and Giant-bird-of-paradise is native to Southeastern Africa.

Ahhh!!
Strangely, I thought that the leaves were quite small compared to the S.nicolai in the botanic gardens in Oxford. I made an assumption based on what looked like the flower emerging.
Thanks for the id Delonix, you did well!!!!!!

Meanie:

You're welcome! : > )

The leaves on this plant do look pretty small....but, the petioles on Ravenala madagascariensis are usually 2 to 3 times longer than Strelitzia nicolai.
