Strelitzia reginae - Bird-of-Paradise Double Flower

Strelitzia reginae - Bird-of-Paradise Double Flower (Strelitzia reginae - Bird-of-Paradise)

The millions of Bird-of-Paradise around started blooming a couple of weeks ago. This flower is developing a second bloom on the same spike. This is a very common occurrence...although, when they have 3 flowers on one spike, that's a little more unusual. Photo taken in Balboa Park, San Diego, CA. on Sept. 15, 2011.

How lovely to see this gorgeous plant. I knew there was something missing on my plant list for my new garden. I love it, & it was my mom's favourite. Here in NZ, we are fortunate enough to be able to grow it in our gardens, though I imagine it is not so easily grown in other parts of the world. Thankyou for putting this pic up.

Dwyllis:

Thanks! Yes, Bird-of-Paradise is a very common sight everywhere here in San Diego and many other areas of California. It's definitely a must for a garden, where it can be grown outdoors.

Meanie:

Hate to be a pessimist! However, it's very unlikely to grow like this one, unless it's planted in the ground.

Alexandramou:

I'm sure yours is in the ground...as plants in pots never really look good, in my opinion.

Just love these. Only see then in hot houses over here.

Theoldgunner:

You would love it here, then. This plant is mass-planted everywhere here in San Diego.

It has got so much larger since the plant split and the repot.........

Meanie:

This plant will usually not grow more than 4ft/1.2m tall in a pot. In the ground it can grow to 8ft/2.4m tall.

It's hit maximum height now then - must surely flower now!!!!!!!!

Meanie:

Give it lots of sun. They bloom best in all day sun.

This is the time of year it starts blooming.

I think that I may have to wait until the spring now.........

It's a short-day bloomer. It typically starts blooming in Sept and blooms through April or early May. Although, some clumps may have some sporadic blooms in summer (however, it's more likely to happen here in San Diego because there's millions planted everywhere).
