Nice one Amy........Ice and a slice all round then.........

17 Feb, 2009

9 or 10 degrees Milky? Wow. And that's not too cold for the Frangipani or the orange tree? I think I'm going to have to seriously look at trying to heat my greenhouse - such that it is. Mind you, if the temps drop to in the -20C's I don't think I could keep the place above freezing.

17 Feb, 2009

What you could do Gilli is maybe put one of these small plastic greenhouse inside your greenhouse and then maybe a sheet of polystyrene on one of the shelves with a themostatically contolled warming mat on it just for them alone. Then by the time its got its plastic cover on it would be like a greenhouse in a greenhouse....and capturing the heat..... This is what I am going to try next year as our electricity bill has been horrendous this year. Yes the frangipani will be ok that low while its in its dormant stage but definately not any lower. The orange and lemon just dont take kindly to huge fluctuations in temperature... By the way, I have just started another 3 seeds off in the propergator........everything is crossed..............

17 Feb, 2009

That sounds like a good plan Milky. I don't have electricity out in my greenhouse though so a warming mat would be out. Unless I bought a really long extension cord. Hmmmm. Something to think about.

Good luck with your Frangipani and I hope your seeds all sprout. I'll keep everything crossed too. My three are doing well. I think it is time to pot them up to the next size. 2 are holding steady at 4 true leaves each and one is at 6 leaves. I got some Adenium obesum seeds from the same supplier as my Frangipani. I have had 2 of 5 sprout and they seem to be doing OK although they still only have their baby leaves.

17 Feb, 2009

Your going very tropical Gilli......good luck with the Adeniums........

17 Feb, 2009

Wow! You really do have a green thumb, Milky! That looks gorgeous...

18 Feb, 2009

Thanks Lori...............

Have found your greenhouse photos and info on your exotic plants fascinating Milky! Am so envious of your Bourganvillia - I so love them when I go to Italy. Do your plants go out in the Summer?

20 Feb, 2009

Yes they all do Gwendas, except the Frangipani, that is unless its a real scorcher. The greenhouse then is given over to cucumber peppers and tomato's plus load of salad leaves in various stages......

20 Feb, 2009

This is great Milky....talking about the pips...I have two lemon trees on my kitchen window sill started last year from pips and I've just pinched the tops out ...they're about 8" tall now and doing really well...will need repotting soon. I'll pop them in the greenhouse for the summer and hopefully they'll have flowers. How did you pollinate your citrus Milky?

21 Feb, 2009

Did you use seed from a lemon Janey?....well duh!! They must have come from a lemon!! What I mean is....did you buy a lemon and save the seed or did you get a package of seed? I really have to learn to explain myself better. :o)
I would like to try a grapefruit.

21 Feb, 2009

I've bought grapefruit that were so old that the seeds were sprouting when the fruit was opened... another tropical that I like to grow is avocado...if you can find fruit that are about to be thrown out you can sometimes find sprouted pips... Have you tried mango? I was wondering how to go about sprouting a mango...does it need the acids in the decaying fruit to break dormancy...or what? Any Idea Milky?

21 Feb, 2009

Yes Gilli....I just stuck the pips that squeezed out of the lemon onto my chopping board into the compost of a geranium on the window sill...and forgot all about them. When they started sprouting I had to really think what they could be, but one sniff of those pretty glossy leaves and ....mmmmm......lemons! Left them in the warm and then potted them up seperately when big enough. I've grown grapefruit before like this but with all the citrus plants....I've never had flowers.

21 Feb, 2009

I havent done and polinating with mine at all. and ive fot 1 lemon and 1 orange. My Kelly {sons wife} grew hers just from a tesco lemon and its now a good 3 feet tall in 2 years.......Lori, I bought a mango 2 summers ago and when I ate it the seed pod had just started to crack, so I put it in a clay pot in half compost half sand.... I soaked it and left it on the stageing and just watered every time it looked really dry. Unfortunately I knocked the pot off and it smashed, but it did have roots about 6 inches long. Tried to repot it, but it didnt survive........tut. I love mangoes and if I find a suitable seed pod again I shall give it another go. Gilli the mago was a little overripe and mushy in the middle so maybe you do need to buy one and let it rot a bit , maybe that was why the pod cracked......

IF anyone is interested i ve found an orange and lemon tree that is winter hardy also evergreen and good in temperatures of -5

21 Feb, 2009

Ooh yes Adam....tell us more....thinking about it though I had an orange tree when we lived in Spain and it survived the harsh winters there with snow and freezing winds.......of course the light was brighter and more consistant in the growing season there.

21 Feb, 2009

And Im all ears to Adam.......

21 Feb, 2009

Its in this weeks amatuer gardening magazine the issue that gave free rudbbckia seeds, ive left my issue at work so cant give any more info than that at the moment will bring it home tomorrow

21 Feb, 2009

I wont bother with those then he he he ..............

21 Feb, 2009

Milky you mentioned that you get the same magazine its in there if you have a look through

21 Feb, 2009

Oh yes..............I remember seeing them............I will have another look

21 Feb, 2009

They sound like good orange and lemon trees Adam but they still wouldn't do for me here. I would still like to hear about them though.

I'll have to give the mango a try Milky. Have you seen dragon fruit?? We have just started getting them in the grocery stores here. I've never tasted one but they look very exotic.
I've just started an avacado today. It's sitting on top of a water filled jar with three toothpicks inserted to keep it balanced. The avacado was very ripe but the seed hadn't cracked open.

I have read that it can take up to 7 years for citrus trees to start flowering so there is hope for your lemon tree yet Janey. I have some grapfruit that are quite seedy so I'll give them a try.
