Trees in Sarlat, Dordogne

I just love these trees in the square in Sarlat, France.
I wish I could grow one in my back garden.
I think they are Chinse Cloud tree, a form of laurel?
I think they need lots of sun to be dense and lush, which I don't really understand as I thought most laurel's were good for shade?
