Salvia hians

I thought it was penstemon when i first looked Spritz....A beautiful salvia....

Isn't it! I'd never come across it before - but it's so lovely and I'm pleased that I found it. My Salvia book says that it's hardy, too. :-)))

beautiful, i really like salvias they are quite interesting when you get the less common ones.

I totally agree - I found another rare one back at the Rare Plants Fair earlier this year. It's a fantastic plant - common name 'Jerusalem Sage', latin name after 'Salvia' - hmmm...I haven't got it in my head yet!

It's Salvia hierosolymitana...do you wonder that I haven't got that in my head yet? It's eitther latin or greek for 'Jerusalem'...if you say it quickly, it does sound like it - well, a bit!

Have you got S. vercillicata? I couldn't do without them in the border - I have three - the blue-y one, 'Purple Rain', and 'Alba'.

I honestly don't know....well, species names do seem to be don't they. Just googled it and got this google result. It appears to be a book title in Latin containing the name....

When you see it amongst other Latin words, it doesn't look so un-latin does it!

Oooh-errr!! I have 'O' level latin...and I can understand a bit of all that..I think...lol....I'd need a dictionary though!

We had to do Latin at my school for our first two years. I don't recall anyone taking it any further. My daughter Rachel hated French and asked to take Latin instead as she loved the Classics, but they wouldn't let her so she opted out of languages all together. I thought that was very short sighted of the school...she was a very keen historian and classicist and she would probably have continued down that route but they said French or German and would only allow Latin as a second language. Now she has no languages and she's moved away from the Classics. Shame as she really still loves her Greek and Roman Mythology! She gave a Primary 4 class a lesson on some of the Myths and they loved it! One of them has developed a continuing interest....it's amazing what children will latch on to when it's taught with real enthusiasm ....sorry.....preaching (no, ranting!) to the converted here aren't I?! I can just see her in three years when she is a Primary Teacher, teaching all the six year olds about Zeus and Hercules! Goodness knows how she will incorporate that into the 'Curriculum for Excellence'...but knowing her she will! :))

I've always been grateful that I learned latin. I found that other languages owed so much to it, and when we go to Italy, that's the closest (naturally!)

It helped my spelling, too, I'm sure. I think it's a shame if children can't learn it in school now - maybe it's the lack of teachers qualified to teach it?

Interesting...Rachel has a real challenge with her spelling as well....hence her hatred of learning new languages! She was a at fee paying school at the time. I don't hear of Latin in State schools any more......I think mine was one of the last ones to have that and it was a Grammar school.

I went to a Grammar school. too. I have no idea if Latin's taught in 'any' schools at the moment. It should be!

So far I only have the classic S. Splendens... but i would love to get more colours...

There are some beautiful Salvias out there - mind you, I bought a new one at an open garden, which looked as though it was about to flower. It's going in the compost bin. The 'flowers' are like nothing at all...they don't 'open'. It just looks the same all the time! Not worth planting. :-((

I'm going to compost it...what a waste. Ah well - never mind. It was only a couple of pounds, not a huge expense. :-(((
