One of my customers's gardens

One of my customers's gardens

I use a hedgetrimmer to trim these heathers immediately after flowering each year. The customer insists on me doing this every year but I find doing it every other year is fine. With heathers never cut into stems lower than where they still have leaves as they will never regrow from these.

I was just saying that to Scotkat....about treating them the same as Lavender. These heathers look quite old, I wonder how much longer they will last....I don't much care for them, but I do love that great purple colour in the winter.

I do like the way bluespruce uses them around the bottom of his conifers. They look best with conifers I think.

Love such mounds of colour in the winter Aman...they look so healthy there....I shall remember your tip when mine are done....:o)

Heathers seem to be very long lived. My mother has had some in her garden for over 25 years and although leggy because they've never been pruned properly they still look healthy.

I guess well trimmed heathers could last almost indefinitely.

I read in RHS encyclopedia of gardening....heathers only last about 10 years, but your customers look older than that to me.

really lovely, like Bluespruces idea of planting with conifers.

"heathers only last about 10 years"

The RhS is definitely wrong on that. I planted a bed of winter flowering heathers at least 25 years go at my mother's and they're all still fine. I wonder if they were talking about summer flowering varieties which do seem to be much shorter lived?

Didn't specify anchorman, but it was in a section about pruning small shrubs/subshrubs so possibly.

Do they have anything planted for other seasons? although this looks so colourful now it would be a shame if this is all they have ¦:-)

There are a few fuchsias in the garden but no it is a bit " green" during the summer. I've suggested a few bedding plants but she doesn't seem interested.

Strange that, it can't be because she doesn't want the extra work, as you do it lol
