Two Ptychococus lepidotus at The San Diego Zoo

Two Ptychococus lepidotus at The San Diego Zoo (Ptychococus lepidotus)

This rare palm native to New Guinea is mostly grown by palm enthusiast (Palm Society members) in coastal S. Cal. These palms are probably among the tallest in the state at around 20ft/6m. Photo taken at the San Diego Zoo on March 26, 2011.

Terratoonie:

Thanks! :>)

I first noticed these palms in 2002. They've more than doubled in size for a very slow growing palm. Not sure if they'll reach their ultimate height here (as they do in New Guinea) in San Diego of 40ft/12m tall.
