Freshly Pruned Royal Palms

These royal palms were very recently pruned. They almost appear over pruned. They still look great against the blue San Diego sky. Photo taken November 11, 2024.

Yes, typically the fronds fall off naturally (self-pruning), but because this is across from the beach the lower fronds typically look dry. This happens in climates with little rainfall to wash the sea salt from the fronds.
The many tall Kentia palms (Howea fosteriana) in the background tolerate salt spray without any problems, because itโs native to very small Lord Howe Island off eastern Australia.

What do they do to them? Cut off the lower leaves? They certainly look great against a deep blue sky!
