Many people would not have guessed the location !

Don't you think they look slightly out of place ?

Yes it could be mistaken for any place down here as well.
Happy New Year!

They certainly are an oddity here but they seem to be thriving despite our climate. I always joke about living on a tropical island with palm trees .
best wishes for 2009 to you all.

Well we had an unusual experience with hail a month ago, some villagers in the interior of the island were utterly confused when they were showered with ice for a few minutes!!

Magnificent! I'm a bit jealous. Orkney is close to the arctic circle and yet there it is growing palms! In Sherbrooke Canada at about 45 degrees latitude we can only dream of growing palm trees. But, a trachycarpus fortunei with a heated shelter for the very cold winter and a thermal isolation of its roots would do the trick. It would be costly but extraordinaire in the warm to hot summer months!
