We have 2 Egyptian Arabians on the property that are Steven's, one is a 2 year old and one is a 27 yr. old at 14 hands...the 4th horse on the property is a mare she is thoroughbred and quarter horse and is closer to 5 hands while Flash is well over 16 hands some times I cannot get on him without a help of some sort, step on a log or a fence rail or a boost but I can and often do get on on my own...not today as my hip is acting up form a tumble I took in my store...most all horses have some Arabian blood in them. As far as I know Flash is Saddlebred with some Pinto breeding stock in him but no Arabian.

beautiful horse!

What a sweet face! I had a feeling the blaze would be there! He looks similar to a retired thoroughbred that I kept years ago, named 'Royal Bronze'. Bronze was bought as a pet, my alternative to letting him be sold for meat, which was sadly a common end for "cheap" thououghs that break down and belong to owners who only see dollar bills. I never rode him, never was much of a rider, but had him as a pasture pet with a friends racers. He was like a big friendly dog - loved to follow us everywhere and very gentle with the children. His only quirk was that he freaked out when his hooves were touched. He was eventually returned home to his original breeder, who kept a small herd of retired race horses to live out their lives peacefully.

Flash is a lovelly lookin' fella! Same as Jac, I thought he was an arab, but if he's only 3 I guess he's got some growing/filling out to do yet. You don't get Saddlebreds here in the Uk (don't think I've ever come across one anyway). You lucky lady, Catfinch!

Grammazoo - glad Bronze found a good home with you. I used to ride a retired racehorse (a big black 17hh steeplechaser). I remember thinking that all thoroughbreds were too skittish and hot-headed to make decent riding horses before I knew her, but this horse, Sally, was just So gentle and absolutely nothing fazed her. She was a rescue horse too - a 'waste product' of the racing industry.

Lovely to read the stories above of rescued horses. Thanks. :o)

http://www.horsesofproudspirit.com

is my favorite site for the US as far as rescue horses....this lady wrote a wonderful book about how she became the caretaker of these beautiful souls....I would certainly love to do her work.

Thank you Sid for your comments about Flash...he is a very sweet gentleman of a horse even though he can become a bit spooky because he is only a teenager by horse years...silly thing.

Thanks for that Catfinch - what lovely people to devote their lives to rescued horses. I too would love the job, but I think I would find it too distressing, because of course not all stories will have happy endings and for every horse that is rescued, many more will slip through the net forgotten. Such a sad waste.

Better to save one than none at all....but i do know what you mean..it would be heartbreaking at times.
