Caryota urens - Fishtail Palm

This is a blooming and seeding fishtail palm. It is the commonest of the fishtail palms grown in Southern California. It will bloom and seed then it will die (usually 3-5 years after flowering). All the Fishtail Palms are monocarpic which mean once the tree blooms it dies. Sad to say.

Marguerite,
I'm sure you are speaking about Caryota mitis which is a cespitose (clustering) palm. This species has many stems (trunks) and when one dies there are many others left and many new stems grow.
Caryota unrens, no, cumingii, and gigas are single stemmed palms and after they bloom they need to be replaced...although, there are usually hundreds of thousands of seeds produced and generally many seedlings grow underneath the dying trees.

How beautiful and such a shame they die after flowering.
