Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Rotfuchs'

Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Rotfuchs' (Cercidiphyllum japonicum)

Red Fox Katsura Tree
New growth is burgundy-red in the early spring. The colour changes to bluish green during summer .Fall colors are bright golden yellows to orange. The falling foliage in autumn suppose to give a scent of burnt sugar but I have never experienced that.

Try crushing the fallen leaves in autumn - you should get the scent then.

I will try Andrew. Last fall we left for Mexico when the leaves were still not in in the mood to leave the tree :-)

Looks a bit Cotinus-- smoke bush like.

The colour is similar to Cotinus coggygria but the shape of the leaf is heart shaped......more like a redbud(Cercis ) Forest Pansy.
