DD - Clerodendrum splendens is native to tropical Africa.

I spent my money in town and didn't dare stop off at the nursery!
I found a seller for some fantastic tropical plants (seeds) from South Africa. Do I risk it?

....and I said to myself....not too many seeds this winter. ha ha. I have seeds I ordered this summer still in their envelopes. Not long now. Closing up the shops today and tomorrow.

I'm sure the white type grows wild here. We usually don't let it grow in our gardens because of the thorny balls.
I pulled one out last week from my garden.

Datura metel grows wild there, too. It grows along the freeways here in the driest soil (which is like concrete).

Did you have a look at exotic-plants on e-bay. Did you find it? I couldn't find it when I just typed exotic-plants but it is a supplier...just have to go find it another way.

Lol...that's the one. A little different but the same. There are some plants on sale from Cyprus on this one. Having a look now.

Ever think about starting orchids from seed?

Not really viable Alex - you will need to be sure that they have been pre-treated, and as a rule they need to be sown under almost laboratory conditions.

Read up on orchid seeds....
I think buying the plants is the way to go.
I will just have to buy them from other countries.

You're correct, Meanie. Sowing orchids seeds is for the experts with a very hot greenhouse.

It's much, much cheaper to just buy orchids in bloom, at least you'll know what you'll end up with (as far as color).

Have you seen the very dwarf Phalaenopsis hybrid orchids available for sale where you live? They're in every store here, now. They're actually very cute! :>)

Delonix raises a good point Alex - the other problem with orchid seeds is that if there is a whiff of a hybrid in the parents then there is a very high chance that the seedling will revert back to one of the grandparents (if that makes sense). Even creating your own hybrid is hit and miss.

We have the mini-mini Phals here in the UK Delonix - I nearly picked one up the other week. But they all seem to be very lacking in roots - I wonder if this is how they hold them back?

Yes, Sorry! I'm not sure how inexpensive orchids are there, I know they can be very cheap here. Some of the newer named hybrids grown in the better nurseries can be quite expensive, though.
