This is my first ever Colchicum. I'd like to add to them gradually, as they tend to be rather expensive!

Who, me? ;-/
Well, I hesitated at paying £3 for one bulb, Tetra, but I'm glad I did. I'll be looking round for less expensive sources in the spring....this came from a GC, all packaged up, but I'm sure I could get some a lot cheaper. Even the adverts to our right are cheaper, come to that, but too late for this year. :-((

Thats right...you tell her Henry!!!
Like the DVD I bought for my sister.s birthday at last minute in Tesco..neighbour bought it at Sainsbury for £6 less!!!!!
That'll teach me to spend all week gardening lol...

Oooops! :-(((

Now you can stop sniggering Spritz, thats one Iris less for the garden..its a disaster!
9 Oct, 2010
I wasn't sniggering, honest! I'm peeved to see adverts on here that are half what I paid for my Colchicum,Tetra - I could have had TWO!!

Lets commiserate!

I agree. Sob, sob. xx

Serves you right , you should plan ahead both of you ......LOL.. ;o))
Only joking it is annoying ,I've done the same thing myself ;o(

I was too late last year - all the ones I saw were already in flower in the packets!!!! So I went to the GC earlier, and got one, plus some autumn crocuses. I 'thought' I'd done well until I spotted those dratted adverts! Boo hoo!

damned if you do...damned if you dont...

I get catalogues of bulbs early in the New Year, where prices are usually very good, so I'll look for these and get my order in ASAP.
10 Oct, 2010
you need to buy the ones flowering in the bags. you can actually grow them in a saucer of water then plant out when the flower fades.
the gc would probably have sold it cheap thinking it had gone over.
this is a beauty spritz.
10 Oct, 2010
Oh no, Sbg. Same price - no reductions! I was shocked. The poor things were growing through the bags too - I'd never have got them out whole!
Thanks - I'd like a few with different shades of pink, and a white one, too. :-)))

Absolutely beautiful B. I planted a lot last year....some flowered but none have returned so far :(

it is beutifull,spritzhenry

Thanks, Karen and Xavia.
Karen - that's dreadful! Surely they can't just last for one year? I might ask a question on that, I think, to see what other people's experience has been....so I don't pay out a lot for one-shot wonders.....if you see what I mean! LOL.
Could yours just be late, do you think?
13 Oct, 2010
Could be late B; but I fear the drainage in my garden is the underlying issue. We'll see...some might appear. There were definitely two good leaf shoots on the large kind in the spring, and they died down as expected, so I was looking forward to seeing the flowers....perhaps later ...we'll see.

I shall keep my fingers crossed for you. :-)

Love this...just like a water lily.....hence the name of course !

Lovely. Sadly mine were ravaged by snails and slugs this year :-(
15 Oct, 2010
Oh no - I really hope that 'my' snails don't find this!

Spritz
Does look like you have a healthy specimen, when it comes to Colcihicum cheap is not necessarily best .unfortunately most now come to us from Holland and that as we know means well dried .several members in the last few week's
have remarked that there's are only producing leaves or nothing at all,They are not bulbs as belonging to the Lily family and suffer far more from being dried.
There was a time when I could purchase them fresh lifted in the UK,but i know of no such source any more.
15 Oct, 2010
Thanks for that information, Bjs. This one was from a GC up near you, lol, but in a glossy packet. If I got any in 'bulk' it would be from the reputable company where I buy my bulbs...they're cheaper as they're minus the gloss - just packed in paper bags.

'Is that a white hue with a tinge of lilac Spritz?
I bet you were pleased with this wonderful sight in
your garden, i know i would be...
15 Oct, 2010
No - it's more lilac-pink. It's a deeper colour than the camera shows. I love it! - Oh - I said that already, didn't I. lol.
