It's strange you've never seen this plant before...it's native to Queensland, Australia. It's very commonly grown here, I have one in my front yard. There's several varieties available now, also.

I bet you're thinking of Cordyline fruiticosa which is called Ti Leaf Plants here and in Hawaii. It come in many varieties, also...usually with leaves of pink, burgundy, variegated yellow, pink and green. I have Ti plant in my front yard, also. :>)
