I have a sheltered corner in the shade San . but it's over shadowed by Hollytrees that take all the moisture from the soil .. . I grow Hosta there . I think it would be to dry , do you ?

im going to check amy, be right back
amy it is good in sun or part shade and likes waters adge or boggy, or a damp place, mine in the shade most of the day till later so i guess that part of garden is moist, so dry wouldnt work as far as i know from reading about it ;o(

Glad you like it. I only set it last year Sandra - on the edge of the pond. Its been lifted though due to the pond maintenance.

Love this Dawn, think I told you I did have it, but fell of the pond shelf into the depths, only saw it flower once :-(
I wonder if it sets seed ;-)

5 May, 2010

It must be like a treasure trove in the depths of your pond, lol. Not sure Kathy about seeds, but I've noticed big roots/rhizomes - I'll see what I can do.

5 May, 2010

Lol Dawn.
Thankyou would love a piece in the future but please wait till it gets bigger if you've only had it since last year, you never know it may set seed think I've seen seed of it for sale :-)

6 May, 2010

i wondered about splitting them to dawn so let me know how it goes plez ;o)

6 May, 2010

Sandra: I'll try and split at some point.
Kathy: I know where you've seen it for sale ..... Plant World.
They are selling seeds for £1.95 under its other name: Peltiphyllum peltatum - in the 2010 brochure and online :-)

mine has alot more roots this time so thats why i asked dawn, but im not sure how to split it and dont want to spoil the plant or kill it ,
simbad its for sale on crocus garden site, ive seen it and told other members who wanted it ;o)

Hi Sandra, I'll have a go next Spring. My book says to divide in Spring or grow from seed in Spring or Autumn.

7 May, 2010

7 May, 2010

Wow Dawn, that is really pretty......

Thanks Maureen. How's your pond.

Love this one, think we have it but it could be a Patasites?

20 May, 2010

I have Petasites too but that is really vigorous - funnily enough I have a photo on page 7 of the leaves, one row below the Arundo. This flowers in very early Spring and has a green flower, I have a photo of the flower on page 3.

Will have a look, the one we have had a pretty pink flower about two weeks ago and no leaves, now the flower has gone and the leaves have appeared, what do you think?

21 May, 2010

Definitely Darmera. My flowers are now gone and the leaves are emerging, stem first, if you know what I mean. They are supposed to like damp conditions but I've read they'll also tolerate it drier.

I think this may be a plant I have been trying to identify, tho I didn't know it had such pretty flowers until I started exploring this site. Does it have slightly flossy leaves - I've only ever seen it in midsummer in stram and pondside sttings. I'm trying to resist the temptation to plant a gunnera which would be much too large bedside my tiddly stream but want something quite archtectural. Love your pond.

Hello Nisparo and thank you for your kind comments. With this plant, the flowers appear before the leaves. The leaves resemble bergenia but smaller. Looked at them today and they are quite dormant, look like iris tubers on the surface of the ground. I love my gunnera but as you know, they do get big. Have you looked at Rheum palmatum, really nice, one of my favourites, earlier to leaf than gunnera but with the added bonus of a flower spike.
