Ficus religiosa - Bodhi Tree, Sacred Fig

Ficus religiosa - Bodhi Tree, Sacred Fig (Ficus religiosa - Bodhi Tree, Sacred Fig)

My Bodhi tree lost all its leaves a couple of weeks ago (which is normal). It's deciduous for only about a week or two...then it grows its new leaves. Photo taken Aug. 8, 2011.

How big do they grow over there.? They are huge trees here, and are sometimes found growing in cracks of buildings and such odd places when small. They shed all their leaves in April when it starts getting hot and grow new leaves within a week or two. Your tree seems young , how old is it?

Mochiseki:

They grow huge here, too (to at least 60ft/20m tall). I've posted some very large ones in the past on GoY. I'm sure there's much, much larger ones in your country where they're native, though.

My little tree is 12 or 13 years old. It has always been in a pot (to keep it small). I don't have room for another Ficus species in the ground...as most grow large and become monstrous.

The Bodhi tree can loose it leaves anytime form April - mid-summer. However, sometimes trees are evergreen. There's many trees trees in Balboa Park which are evergreen. There's many old, large trees at the San Diego Zoo, also.

Ficus: retusa, nitida, macrophylla, rubiginosa, benjamina, and carica will grow out of cracks in freeway overpasses and in old palm bases. I've never seen a F. religiosa do this, however, I assume it's very possible.

This tree despises being in a pot. Ficus are know for their absolutely massive root-system. This is why it's not recommended to plant by a house or any concrete surface.

Here's the reason why:
