Ficus palmeri - Rock Fig

Ficus palmeri - Rock Fig (Ficus palmeri - Rock Fig)

This is my 31 year old Ficus palmeri, it has gotten big in this spot growing through the holes of its pot 10 or 12 years ago. Posted for my GoY friend Stan. Photo taken on Jan. 22, 2018.

What a nice sculptural form with a warm colored bark. Thanks Andy.

Yes, it's a really nice little tree, around 20' tall.

I'm going to have to cut it way back. It drops a lot of leaves on my neighbor's front yard.

You can see all the die-back on the Southern Magnolia from the drought. That all has to be cut, also.

For about a decade I grew mine as a Bonsai. I just got tired of it not really taking to that.
I saw a photo of one on palmtalk that looks a lot like mine does now that its in a 5 gallon pot. Being a Baja Ca. tree,it likes heat. The nursery type 5 gallon seems to fit the bill.

This tree is over 30 years old. I purchased it in a little nursery in Orange, back in spring of 1987. It froze to the caudex in the 1990 freeze then came back with multiply stems. I only let one grow, though.

I do know I see it for sale at nurseries here as a bonsai. I think I may have to make a cutting. I may have to move one day. I want a back-up plant.

I like to look at others as Bonsai. Like with my Pseudobombax. But,after awhile,it gets old for myself because I risk every cold winter losing it. Now,I let them grow in larger pots. If I had the room-they would be in ground. The usual balance of tender-risk in ground.

68f at 11am in the bay area on Feb 2nd. I am NOT used to the feeling of warm air in Feb before noon!

Plant always grow so much better in the ground. I can't do Bonsai because they will dry out and die! lol

I'm getting so used to 68 degrees before 8 a.m. It really is pretty darn crazy this winter. According to the meteorologist here in San Diego we've only had 3 days which were winter-like, this winter. Very unusual.
