My small Vietnamese Gadenia has a flower. It's had the bud all through winter. Now, the days are long enough and hot enough for it to flower. Photo taken on April 16, 2017.

Yes and all Gardenias are extremely fragrant. I have Gardenia thunbegia which has even a stronger fragrance and is more tropical. It also grows into a tree here in San Diego, CA.

Large bloom. I have something called "South African Gardenia". It can be a large viney/shrubby thing. Only my keeping it on low water slows it down. I don't think I ever posted it anyplace. Its not especially tender...I have a feeling that yours is like J.sambac..not up to a freeze.

Stan,
If you are talking about G. thunbergia (a native of south-east Africa). It's not anything like a vine. It's a very large shrub or tree to 20'. It has huge extremely fragrant flowers which cover the shrub or tree in summer. It has a big potato-like fruit, also.

Stan,
I've done the same thing. I just wanted you to know it was a Gardenia species. It does grow in the SF Bay Area.
I do know of J. angulare. It grows here, also. It's a beautiful flowering, fragrant vine.

Terratoonie:
You're welcome. :>))
Gardenia jaminoides 'Mystery' has one of the largest and most fragrant flowers of any Gardenia. The flowers can measure 6" (16 cm) or more across. I used to grow them when I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area.
