Heliotrope Midwinter

Heliotrope Midwinter (Heliotropium arborescens (Fragrant delight))

One really took off from new shoots and seems ready to start blooming again. I'll love having heliotrope around again! I just cut them both back about half for spring.

I had a heliotrope seed sprout a few weeks ago. But since then it has just sat there at 1/2" high and doesn't seem to be growing at all. Are they slow growers GT?

I think they are Gilli. They grow quicker in the summer with alot of light but I'd expect a seedling to go a little slow right now. This one wintered even with no cold, so I think you're seedling will wait for a little further towards spring.

Thanks GT. I'll try and be patient. :o)

Thanks Hywel. I lost mine last year. These got a lot more light. They are still really small for a year old plant.

I really like them. I'm going to try some seeds this spring.

Good luck with your seeds Hywel.
This looks a healthy plant.

how are you coping with the dark winter ?

Oh, TT, I'm finally COLD! :-) We've been socked in with this wretched deep freeze and ice fog, and as each year, I'm coping by nit picking the bloomers up on the loft where its always a shady summers day. This heliotrope bloom will tide me through for sure.

Hywel, I have heliotrope as a staple, I just can't get enough, and so far other than needing more light, it has a very fuschia like winter habit, drops leaves and rests before another year. I was inspired to overwinter it after finding it originates as a peruvian shrub in the mountains, so it doesn't mind a cool winter just doesn't like to freeze. And that vanilla scent! I love it.
