My customer asked me to dig out and throw away a plant. He knows I like to rescue plants - so he said I can have it.
Hooray! so now I have huuuuge lacecap hydrangea. Need to find big pot for it now. And prune it very hard....

Hi Terra.
Oh, I am sure it will be grateful for rescuing. The question is - where I am going to put it. Too big for my tiny back garden, so I think it might have to go at the front. Running out of the space in the garden already and there is always something I am rescuing from work, lol.

Lol...
very difficult when you start running out of space ..
Not much planting space left in my gardens because I keep the lawns for my dogs play on.
I have hydrangeas by a shady fence and they seem to do well there ... their flowers are wonderful ...

I remember when I first saw the lace cap type of hydrangea I just loved it!
My front 'garden' should be perfect for it - it's shady most of the day. There is still one flower left on the shrub - I don't have a heart to cut it off, lol.

I usually leave a few of the old flower heads on my hydrangeas over the winter... My understanding is that it is more important to do so on the mopheads than on the lacecaps, which are generally hardier.
Your front garden area sounds ideal for your new acquisition ! Looking forward to photos of the flowers when your hydrangea is established. :o)

it does look a fare size.

That's huge Kasy ... good luck with finding a home for it ... :o)

I'd say leaving the seed heads helps protect young leaf buds from frost damage. I already have few plants in my front garden - which is basically gravel area around my van. Whatever is getting too big for my back garden is being moved to the front.
In this case it will go straight to the front - have to find pot big enough for it to be happy, lol.

Hmm ... I wonder if one of your customers has a big pot they no longer use!

this customer has got some pots - smaller ones but they are blue which I am after... I might ask them if they would be willing to sell them cheap, lol. and there is a big one, yes... hmmmm.

I am greatful it did not end up in the compost Kasy.
They are beautiful and you will have years of enjoyment from it. Good work.

Hi, Kasia, good deal. However, i do not have experience, that lacecap hydrangea blooms better if radically pruned. I am very careful with that especially after cold winter when stems are likely to be damaged. I spare as much as possible and i have lot of flowers. However, I am opened to any new ideas.

It still got one flower on, lol. Sitting in a big pot now - but it will take two to get it through the house into the front garden, lol.
That's what I've found out as well Katarina - in areas with heavy winters it is better to keep the seed heads on - it is a bit of winter protection for new leaves. I should prune it heavy now as it lost a lot of roots when I was digging it out (took me almost an hour as the access was bit difficult, lol)
And as it is a mature plant I think it needs bit of thinning out as well.

Well, if it survived, then it will bloom anyway, but bit later. Maybe first season or two you will have less flowers and more new shoots.

As long as I know I've saved a plant from compost bin - it take take for it as long as it needs to flower, lol.
