Kigelia africana - Sausage Tree

Kigelia africana - Sausage Tree (Kigelia africana - Sausage Tree)

This young Sausage tree is blooming and has many buds on it. The sausage-type pods will not develop for a month or so. This is for my GoY friend Terratoonie. Photo taken May 23, 2009.

Saw this during one of my visits to the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens just recently - the tree was filled with pods. Think I posted a close-up in one of my blogs - such a fascinating pod.

Bernieh:

I have several large trees with pods posted in past photos. This is a young tree, only planted about 2 years ago. They are very fascinating trees and are very tropical...being native to the torrid Congo region of Africa.

The largest known sausage tree in San Diego and one of the largest trees in California is planted a mile from my house at San Diego State University.

Terratoonie:

Glad you found it again!

It amazes me looking at this photo! This tree has grown considerably since this photo was taken less than a year ago.

Looks a nicely shaped tree and good to know it is growing well...

Terratoonie:

I noticed it had been trimmed recently, however, it still looks larger than when I took this photo last year. I'm sure with all the rain we've received this year so far ...it will be growing very well this year.

It seems that the loads of rain in California is encouraging lots of trees and plants to grow very well ! Are many of your own garden shrubs showing signs of extra growth from so much rain?

Terratoonie:

We've had close to the yearly average rainfall already in San Diego...however, some cities in California, especially the northern part of the state have had much more than average rainfall. We're hoping it's going to be enough to break the 7 year drought and lift the water-restrictions!

Yes, my garden has been very lush with lots of growth...I even have a tremendous amount of grass and weeds growing also.
