Yum! A few years back there was some talk about Cavendish bananas being in danger? Do you recall that?

"Bananas in general are especially susceptible to disease because the plants are clones of each other. Bananas are reproduced by cultivating their corms, as they do not produce seeds, and as a result, all Cavendish bananas around the world are genetically identical. This means that when a disease evolves to attack the Cavendish cultivar, it can potentially impact every Cavendish plant in the world, wiping the cultivar out in a very short period of time."
This is what I was thinking of Andy. the fact that genetically all of our eating bananas are identical!..

Penny,

There's many varieties. Some are dwarf to only 6' tall and others to 25' tall.

Lori,

Yes, I know about the many diseases afflicting bananas. It is sad that some cultivars can't be grown anymore because of the Panama wilt (Fusarium oxysporum). It's really nasty! Fusarium oxysporum affects many palm trees here in California, also.

And it is tree about the Cavendish varieties being highly susceptible too. The Cavendish varieties are some of the best-tasting bananas! Williams and Dwarf Cavendish bananas are still sold here, though.
