That's absolutely beautiful! I love them, however, can't grow them here...as it's too warm in winter. :>(

You've got that right!!! Even when I lived in the San Francisco Bay Area the winters were too mild for these plants. Only in the inland cold canyon areas up in The Bay Area do they grow well.

One day I may try a tree peony. I have a feeling it's going to be quite a challenge...but the tree peony has a lower chilling requirement (needing less hours of cold). I would have to buy it some place other than San Diego...I've never seen them for sale here (probably our local mountains would have them for sale).

Tree Dahlias are very commonly grown in CA. I've seen more growing in the San Francisco Bay Area and Santa Cruz Area. They can grow very large and can be evergreen contrary to what is written about them. I've seen them more than 30ft/10m tall in Santa Cruz.

As much as I like the tree Dahlia, a sense of realism says "no"!

Some of that and the unpredictable winters too - they're not cheap.......

Typically, they bloom late in the year through winter and early spring. I'm guessing it might be difficult to bloom there? I know the tops/stems are very tender to cold.

I might be tempted if the greenhouse works out......

I just took a photo of a tree dahlia growing in Balboa Park today, while walking my dog. I'll post it soon. :>)
