Pouteria viridis - Green Sapote

A lower branch of this fairly rare Central American tree at Quail Botanical Gardens. The fruits take about 10 months to ripen. Supposedly they are very delicious! Photo taken July 7, 2009.

It is in a very different family. Loquat is in the rose family (Rosaceae). Green sapote is in the Sapote family (Sapotaceae).
Many of the Pouteria species have virtually identical leaves...which closely resemble loquat leaves...however,
Pouteria species are really tropical in origin.

This must be a relative to the loquat tree. We have a loquat tree on the property and it looks very similar to this.
