Seed taken from the species seems to have crossed with a nearby Primula pubescens variety

That's one for BJS to answer.I do know that you need 2 types of flower,pin eyed and thrum eyed.Almost like male and female but not quite.

Was the seed collected from a yellow one.Unless that was a true species it happens a lot, pretty anyway.
