At last found out what this plant is called! Now I know how to care for it and when to divide it at the one in the front garden needs doing.

Lovely plant isn't it Tanethra seeds all over the place here, even in cracks in the pavement :-)

Yeah Simbad, great plant and very hardy considering the winter we've had.
I did pick out a self seeded plant from the front garden and planted it in the back. Was thinking about planting some around the patio edge and dress the top with gravel would look great.
The centre of the one in the front has thinned out and looks due for dividing next spring. Is it a case of digging it up and spliting it and how many plants could you get from it?

Yes the flowering stem and leaves do tend to die after flowering, and look a bit messy, you should get quite a few plants if you split, each fan of leaves will make a new plant, even with a small amount of root I find they grow away, just cut the leaves back like you would an iris to prevent wind rock.
