Marguerite:

Thanks! African Tulips grow in tropical and subtropical climates. They can be very weedy in the wet tropics and subtropics though (I'm sure you know this since you lived in Cairns). : > )

Sixpence:

Generally, this is how this tree flowers...with hundreds or thousands of flower spikes. :>)

Very true. It does have a glowing appearance. It looks very nice with up-lighting.

Marguerite:

The flower spikes are pretty large and have dozens of flowers which open over a period of 2 - 4 months.

I have 80 photos of African Tulip trees posted on GoY. I didn't realize I've posted so many! LOL! :>)

I grew this tree from seed and donated it to the Fullerton arboretum in the nineties.
Sold about 2000 blooming small trees to a nursery in San Diego county that sold them in two days time.
I live in the Sacramento area now and am trying to grow this tree in a whisky barrel with the aid of a heat lamp in the winter time. So far so good.

Hello Indo:

Wow! Thanks for the incredible information!
This tree is really beautiful! It appears to receive a lot of good care.

There’s so many African Tulip trees in San Diego. It’s a pretty common landscaping tree now.
