but the viola and spurge have worked out their borders...the viola is the buffer between the ground cover and the lawn...

Thanks folks! yes, I'm gradually getting rid of the ubiquitous weed (grass) I prefer clover to grass in some spots...it's lush and sweet smelling and once it's mowed it looks as good as a grass lawn, (IMHO)
