Hello Summer!

My husband and I recently moved to the mountains in western Georgia, his family has owned property here since the 1740’s, can you even imagine. We have been putting in work on the old family farmhouse, built in 1904 by my Love’s great grandfather. It has been unoccupied for 20+ years and the renovations are quite slow going. Here’s a picture in the snow.

Being quite pregnant at the time with our 2nd child, I started just over a year ago making some changes to the exterior. For starters I’ve always wanted a brick pathway, so I spent some time diging through the hard Ga clay and gathering some spare bricks that were placed around the yard, I even gathered from nearby burned out houses. A year later I finally finished, steps and all! redistributing the excess dirt has been fun! Will post some photographs soon.

I’ve also been hard at work thining out the sapplings from the beds, and planting bulbs earlier this spring. I’m exctied to see what pops up! some multicoloured Gladiolus, blue Iris, transplanted daffodils (which I was so excited to see literally thousands of in the field next to the house.) Daylillies, some wild violets. This is going to be a slow going project due to funds, and availablity of time.

I will be accepting any suggestions, being as I don’t know much about what I am doing, but just learning as I go along.

It already seems to have a nice lot of colour with those flowers you've mentioned so you're on your way :-)))

Welcome to GoY. It's nice for you to live in a house which your husband's family built. I also lived in an ancestor's cottage until recently so I understand how you must feel about it. I hope all your plans for the garden go well.

We have 350 acres most of which is forest preserve. But I have about 5 acres up near the house to "play" with. Some days its a daunting task, its a good thing I really enjoy it.

Welcome GA mum! I also have an old farmhouse in north GA (Carroll county) - built circa 1900 - came with its own ghosts - no one knows who they are or what they want but it looks like they're here to stay! I've been slowly working on a garden myself, but it's not always easy with the dreaded Georgia clay and bad soil (take my advice and amend it, amend it, amend it - it'll be worth it in the end). Your house looks similar to mine, I will post a photo.
