What did you see on the way to the shops?
I am on a weeks holiday. Decided to go to the shops with my daughter today. We were walking along our road and I heard someone shout “Pauline were’s the mum gone?” I thought to myself I know that voice, It was the caretaker of the nursery. When I looked over the fence I saw 3 grown men rumaging in the bushes! What are you doing I asked?. I heard my daughter shout “Mum look, there lovely” There was a mother duck walking along the path followed by 6 of the cuteist ducklings you ever did see. The men shouted “there gonna go in the road!”. Sure enough mother duck and her ducklings casualy walked across the road. I swear mummy looked both ways. They walked passed me and into the nursery grounds.
My daughter laughed and said “Mum I think your going back to work” We all followed in hot pursuit! me, my daughter and the 3 men. At the very bottom of my road and across the next road is a park that has a large pond. The 5 of us decided that mum and her babies should be captured and taken back to the pond; before one of them got hurt. I volunteered to get hold of the mother as the men (Lol) were worried that she might bite or scratch them!!. I sent my daughter around one bush and I went round the other. I was just sticking my head in the bush just about to pick the mum up, when I heard a manager from the nursery shout “Pauline, I’ve rung the RSPCA and they say to leave them alone, they will be ok. Mum is looking for water”! Me and daughter looked at each other and at the time we pointed and both said “but the pond is that way!” The manager said again “There’ll be ok leave them” So reluctantly we left them alone.
Mother duck must have been tired after all this excitement and she settled herself down under the bush with her babies behind her and had a little nap!! Bless her I really hope that they will all be ok.

I'm sure they were ok. Sometimes humans think they know best but I'm afraid it is seldom the case. All those fussing people probably frightened them. Ducks know what's best for ducks I think.

Awww, bless. I bet they were fine. Mum duck knows best! There is a duck in Borton-on-the-Water that nests in a window box above one of the sheds - she's been on TV. I was lucky enough to be there on ones of hte days she decided to take her ducklings to the river across the road. The owner of the shop has a cardboard box at the ready, waits for them to jump, CATCHES them as they fall, pops them in the box and carries them across the road, where they are reunited with Mum. They do that every year!!

Oh Sid what a wonderful story, made me smile !!. And such a nice person to carry them across the road!! I saw mother and babies recently. They made it safely back to the pond, all the babies where sitting on barley bails that the men have put in the pond to try to keep the blanket weed down. I meant to taker a picture of them to give everyone an update on her progress , but camera wasen't in my bag!. That will teah me, not to keep swopping my bags to go with my outfits!! lol
