Growing beetroots in a cardboard box

Do you know!! it never crossed my mind that beetroots could be grown in a box, as I always thought they were grown on allotment plots. As an experiment I planted some seeds in an old banana box and hey presto!! I have nearly matured beetroot plants growing away in my cloche, along with my carrots, courgettes, and onions. Since joining this forum, my confidence has grown more and more for this I thank all of you for your advice and support.

Oh thanks Nana!!, one thing though, because of this stupid climate, for now I'm keeping them under cover because the heavens have just opened here and although I'm becoming keen I'm not venturing out in this and it seems to be alot cooler than of late.
Hows your garden doing? looking lovely I hope, anyway thanks for your comment.

Thanks for the comment Hywel, its nice to know that support is there when you want it. I just wish I could have had a larger veg patch, but having to cope with being disabled I'm afraid a patio will have to do and I am enjoying it. Infact only a few months ago I had no interest at all in gardening but i can tell you !!I love it!!lol!!

Hello again, beetroot doing well but don't try this at home, the one downfall with cardboard is it goes soggy, so when you move the box or try to pick it up it leaves a soggy bit behind. I think its just first time lucky and I won't be growing them this way again. Hey but !!!he who dares wins!! or fromage de dubonet!! as they say in Holland.!!lol!!

Hahaha GF, mind you i dont know what that means lol..
Ahhh we live and learn, next time you will have to use waterproof cardboard boxes. At least you can recycle your soggy boxes, maybe try growing sacks next time, just a thought..

I totally agree with you daisy, next time I will be planting them in a raised bed from now on. Oh!! what "fromage de dubonet" means is I speak fluent Del boy and when it comes to growing things in cardboard boxes, !!what a 24 carrat plonker I am!!lol.

I took your advice daisy, and I have transplanted them in one of those grow bags. They are doing very well now but the box is a soggy mess so its binned. I have also transplanted some broccoli seedlings as they are now
more established because my first lot were eaten by a pesky slug so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that these grow well.

Hahaha Greenfingers, very funny... those growbags are amazing, ive seen gardeners use allsorts, strong plastic shopping bags, tyres, plastic drums etc, we are a smart lot, us gardeners :))))
Slugs grrrrrr, I flung some pellets around (in temper) a few days ago, counted 10 upto now :) + snails.. keeping my fingers crossed for your Broccoli, I think maybe ill grow more veg (in bags) next year...

Hi daisy, like you I've been flinging some slug pellets around and up to now no major damage. I think I have found the culprit for all the holes in my cabbage and cauli leaves ( a little green bug in the soil, have you any advice on how to get rid?

A green bug! is it caterpillar like, or hard like a beetle, small, big, I would use a spray, provado (spelling) is good and it lasts upto 6 weeks...kills everything so, spray at night, for the bee's ladybirds etc. thats what ido..

Hi daisy, its a caterpillar and its a pain in the neck! most of the cabbage and cauli leaves have holes in them I will be getting some stuff to stop them dining out with my veg.
