The bark looks a little like a silver birch's bark but the shoots around the soil line looks like magnolia, there again two different colours look like two different rootstock. Sorry I don't know.

I did think it was a Japanese Maple at first a variety that is called 'Atropurpureum' so I looked it up and alas it is different buds they hang downwards and are more red than green, Oh well keep looking. :o) Bobg

Could it be a member of the Salix family look like form of pussy willow?

This is a typical salix catkin. some species have all male flowers others all female and some have both. fnny things plants.

You've got me beaten Jacque! Is the first picture of flower buds or seed pods? The bark looks familiar, but I don't know why.
