Hi Spritz glad u like my Amaryllis i cant wait 4 it 2 flower so i can take lots of Pics :)
12 Jan, 2010
actuly i see from photo it is no amarylis, but hipestrum- theer agin,it may be amaryliss but hte photois wrong. however at htis time of yeerit is almost certanly a hippeastrum - intrest that hte plnt paket has both name particlar wehn you beer in mind htat hte plnts come from compleetly dofrent continents!!!
12 Jan, 2010
?? i thought both plants were the same Derek? :/
12 Jan, 2010
Jacque, it's not the same...Amaryllis and Hippeastrum are from the same family Amaryllidaceae. But Amaryllis has only one species Amaryllis beladonna and comes from South Africa. It flowers in Summer no matter where it grows - in the pot or straight in the garden flowerbed. Hippeastrum has many species and hybrids and is native to the South America. Another difference between these plants is - Amaryllis' stem isn't hollow inside, but Hippeastrum's stem is empty.

12 Jan, 2010
Well said Uma.....I have been trying to persuade many friends to call them by the proper name. Jac...perhaps you could get your GoYpedia page name changed to Hippeastrum or put under that name as well, so we can educate people to use the proper name?
12 Jan, 2010
Amblealice, I always use the right name of this one. And try to explain to other people to use the right name...Agree with you as for asking to change the name of this page...:)
12 Jan, 2010

12 Jan, 2010
just read that jacque, so you can grow them outside to, will you try one outside?
12 Jan, 2010
No il stick to growing them Indoors San :)
12 Jan, 2010
i may put my other thats already flowered out when cold weather is gone and see what happens
12 Jan, 2010
I know about the outdoor one - Amaryllis belladonna but I'm really confused about why the indoor ones are sold as 'Amaryllis'?? If you google them, you get images of the indoor ones.
I'm afraid I shall have to stick with that name now. Sorry Alice, Uma and Derek.
12 Jan, 2010
so are these made for indoors then, and are the others which are used with proper name for outdoors, confused now lol
12 Jan, 2010
A. belladonna is an outdoor perennial plant, Sandra - it's BIG and takes up a lot of space. Not always hardy, depending on where it's grown and the winter temps. It's a one-off. No relations!
The others are definitely indoor or greenhouse plants and wouldn't be happy outside.

ok thanx barbara :o)

Looking at your plant, I decided to pot my Hippeastrums resting in the garage. :) I have 15 big bulbs growing from the baby-bulbs of my parents' plants and 3 small ones. Hope, they'll flower this year...
Now they are re-potted and have some fresh soil...
