carnations

Hi folks having never grown them before, i took up the offer of 9 free plants from garden news in July..paid just p&p about £4 ..

all arrived in excellent condition..

out of the 9 i planted..only 7 have survived ..

the next 2 pics were taken Sept 20th..

The next 2 on 26th October..

last month i took 22 cuttings from them..all have taken root & doing well..

they will all go in the border next year…not bad for the price of postage ..

That's amazing! What a wonderful bargain. I only discovered making cuttings this past year, so 2012 my garden will be full of them! I'm hoping the ones I took from some unnamed white, trailing, intensely perfumed carnations are still alive up in my loft, under the skylight.

Hope they all smelled as lovely as promised! Your border should be wonderful next year.
Don't worry about recycling pets though Frybo, PET stands for Polyethylene terephthalate - I'm sure you really wanted to know that!!

Well done Joan ... lots of lovely cuttings from these plants ... I am so tempted to look at my Dianthus cuttings but know I should leave them alone until the roots show through the base of the pots! ... They look healthy on the top growth so fingers crossed . . . . .

26 Dec, 2011

Cheers Shirley..i only thought of doing this after you said you had been taking your cuttings..I would leave your Dianthus as long as they look ok.:o))

Okey-dokey! . . . . .

They look really healthy, glad they have all taken so well. Not bad is it really 20 odd plants for £4.

Were they easy to take cuttings from? You have now inspired me to have a go with my Dianthus Romance. The idea being I will have some plants to use in my OHs garden.

Samjp.. i think the way you take the cuttings is called..piping..i got the tip from another blog & googled it..you just "pick " out shoots of leaves..sharply & try to get some root with it & plant up in pots..that is it ..but would maybe ask on here in "questions" to get a more experienced answer..good luck..:o)
