My first Blog!

Today I nearly bought a Gardening Journal! I have bought so many new plants (as I did last year) and its time I was more accountable to where I planted them, and how are they doing! I must admit to thinking “I won’t be able to keep a journal going” and then I came across GrowsonYou! This could be the answer!!
A little background history. I have been gardening for the last 19 years when we bought our current house. You see, I did not buy an ordinary garden – I bought a garden with a huge natural sandstone right bang in the middle of it and I remember the old lady who we bought the house from saying “you’ll never get anything to grow on there”!!
My husband and I had never gardened before (our house before was brand new with grass front and back – perfect for young children but not for ‘serious gardeners’)! So, we were basically starting from scratch with the help of my mum-in-law who gave us lots of cuttings, plants and great advice.
Some plants took, some didn’t and many times I planted them in the wrong place but soon became confident about digging them up and repositioning them. My mum-in-law used to say “Julie, your plants should be on wheels”!!
Anyway, to cut a long story short my hubby and I both love our garden, yes its challenging with its rock and dry shady sandy soil but we have learned what works and what doesn’t and we’re still learning!!
Over the last 11 years in particular, it has been a constant source of comfort to me since I lost Dad in 2007. He was a very keen gardener with two greenhouses and when I’m out in the garden up to my eyes I feel close to him. He grew the most amazing chrysanthemums that would not have been out of place at Chelsea and his Alicante tomatoes were just simply the best.
Quite simply, when I’m out gardening, apart from being with my family, I’m at my happiest.
I am looking forward to uploading some photographs throughout the different seasons and blogging about my new additions to my Garden Family!!

Welcome to GOY. I now have a mental image of plants cycling madly around the garden thanks to your mother-in-law, lol. I too feel closer to my dad who passed away 10 years ago when I am out in the garden, so I know how you feel.

Welcome to GoY Julie. I joined this site after I lost my gardening hero.....my dad. We spent many happy times at the gardening centre and he was always there to advise me on planting. This site has been wonderful for me and I have great friends here to keep me right.

welcome to GoY.
You will love the section where you can list your plants and photos in an alphabetical order if you chose to. I find it invaluable to keep a check on where I have planted things and when they flower and how they are fairing.
I will look forward to seeing photos of your garden Julie.
