I also have the doves hunched in the beech tree. I know them as collared doves too sticki. they first came to Britain as a rare visitor in 1958 apparently. Looks like they forgot to go home :o))

oh i didnt know that ~ thanks SBG ~ i wonder if the wood pigeons we get put the collared doves off?
im glad they forgot to go home! do you know where they came from?

I cant remember but it was Europe, the wood pigeons and collared doves seem to co exist in the area, sadly we are losing the turtle dove due to the competion for food.

do you know what food they especially like? we used to get them at our old house which was only about 3 miles from here but in a more open situation

This is collared dove...Now, you see, one cannot rely on Google translations. It showed me as if collar dove=turtle dove. When you started discussion on it I checked pictures on internet and I saw that turtle dove is in fact the one living around Mediterranean. So far, my intention was good...:)

not to worry kat ~ i just thought it was another name!

what kindof bird is that in the first few photos Kat? beatiful!
15 Jan, 2013
oh & by the way, my 'fine-feathered' friends desert me as soon as the feeders empty!
15 Jan, 2013
we call the bird in the first few photos a blue tit ~ not sure if katarina has a different name?
15 Jan, 2013
Yes, similary (azur tit/blue tit). It is smaller then the yellow one. Just yesterday one guy recommended me the size for nesting house for them - success depends on the size of its "door". Lol.
According to actual statistics, there are 1,500 000 - 3,000 000 blue tits in Slovakia during the winter.

I heard that about the door too kat!

Unbelievable.

I think it is so that bigger birds can't get in ~ its a protective measure?
15 Jan, 2013
Yes.

Floralhead@Thank you, I think the same scenario is here. Unfortunately, not just with the birds...

they are certainly enjoying your treats katarina, nice pics :o)

My presence in fact works on them as strawman.

Love the picture's :0)

I have never seen one of them. I looked in my field guide & don't see it listed. There is one called a 'tufted titmouse though but it doesn't look much like your bird.

Don t be desperate though ...

Lovely pictures, Katarina. We get loads of woodpigeons and collared doves here. The doves sit together in pairs for long periods of time, looking very relaxed, just watching the world go by. They are so pretty! And mixed flocks of bluetits/great tits/coal tits tour the garden, combing the trees - for insects, I imagine. They like the feeders too, especially in cold weather.

Yes, nature is so calming. Just today I noticed desperate magpie flying around. Everything is covered by half metre of snow for several days, so it probably doesn´t have enough food. Yet, how to serve food for magpie? Classic feeders are useless.
18 Jan, 2013
I find magpies will peck at fat balls in holders that are positioned near a branch they can perch on. They will also take food off the ground - pastry trimmings are a favourite.
