A large colony of mason bees, which was living in the wall of our garage and resisted to all attempts for eradication, died out this spring. Just disappeared. And this is wgat I recently read, maybe you will also find it interesting.

Yes this is quite frightening. I signed a petition some time ago abut banning one of the pesticides which might be to blame. Sadly Britain voted against the ban but the EU passed it.

It certainly is a worrying problem, and one which more people should be taking seriously.

I've liked this blog Kat because it does highlight the concerns with bees, I have a friend that keeps bees and she has 6 hives, to which 3 died of colonie collapse in 2012, but in saying that I've seen more this yea than last year.

I do not know what sort of knowledge Albert Einstein had on this topic when he said a famous sentence (among ecologists) "If the bee disappeared off the face of the earth, man would only have four years left to live, ” but one thing is sure.
We are still changing natural flora and use chemicals, which are doing evolutionary changes not just in animals but also in human race. Long time ago I made interview with a famous oncologist from Sweden. He was also activist against using pesticides with PCB in Sweden and thanks to his activity they were banned in Sweden, Norway and Denmark. As a physician he noticed unusal sorts of cancer in wild animals and lumberjacks, which could be associated with PCB. His materials made governments to change their policy. He and his collegues were hectored, one had to emigrate to Australia. In spite of that, these chemical were banned. It was more then 30 years ago. Since that time lymphoma (sort of cancer of lymphatic vessels) have been declining in Scandinavian countries, while in the rest of Europe they are permanently increasing.
