Having recently constructed a bee hotel from a very large bamboo that had to be dug up and moved, i seem to be spending more and more time of my time sitting nearby with a coffee and observing the different species checking in for a stay.
One of the main visitors is this chap
The ruby tailed wasp, beautiful looking thing isn’t it?.
Unfortunately they parasatize mason bee eggs and one of the other occupants of the hotel happens to be mason bees!.
I have also spotted leaf cutters, all these solitary species are excellent pollinators and to be encouraged in any garden.
So theres the rub, i’ve done my bit for bees and built the solitary species a lovely home which is also attracting unruly elements but we cant pick and choose only the cute ones.

I don't blame you for watching when you get a chance to see something as lovely as that - even if it has nasty habits!
I must get round to mending my bee house and putting up more, as when I am weeding there always seems to be one bee which I have disturbed which nests in the ground and can't find it's way home - big guilt trip, but I have to weed sometimes!

That's nature, I'm afraid.
But, at least you get to see such rare species as a result of your good work.
