Silver Comet Trail

My friend Natalie and I went for a long bike ride today on the Silver Comet trail. The trail begins north of Atlanta and goes all the way to the Alabama line. There wasn’t much going on yet, plant-wise, but we did enjoy some nice scenery.
Falling would not have been a good idea….it was a steep drop!
We saw two turtles, a painted turtle and an eastern box turtle.
So much for the friendly folks of Polk County….it’s hard to see in the photo, but under “Buddy?” someone has written “Gun?”
The trail runs through the town of Rockmart, which has a pretty riverside park.
This boardwalk runs over a little wetland. We were hoping to see some frogs, but no luck.
We saw quite a few mayapples growing along the trail.
We would have stayed longer, but both of us had messy houses to clean and yardwork to do. So we reluctantly had to turn around and head home. Still, it was a nice day out!

Thanks for the pictures - it's so nice to see somewhere different from here and I'm glad you had a nice day out.

You have some nice scenery there. I'm glad you showed the photos of your day out. I enjoyed seeing them :) the turtles were fascinating. I didn't know there were different types.

There would be better scenery if we could get to it - most of the property along the trail is privately owned and there are 'no trespassing' signs up all over. There are nice views when you can get away from the trees and actually see them!
There are 27 turtle species in the state & about 9 in my area; south GA has many more species than north GA, with some counties having 15 or 20 species!

I've never heard or seen mayapples, Lauram...do they produce flowers or the leaves that are visible in your photo? I liked the boardwalk...it reminded me of the wharfs on the Island where I grew up...in B.C....and I can almost hear the sound of you biking across the boardwalk too :)
Lovely scenery....I've never seen turtles in the wild...sorry you didn't manage to see some frogs....another time perhaps.

They do produce a flower under the leaf, and then a fruit. The entire plant with the exception of the fruit is poisonous. I have a few growing in my garden, but they've never flowered - I think they just go dormant due to heat and drought. I am determined to get some fruit out of them this year! It's interesting; as eastern box turtles have declined, so have mayapples. The turtles eat the fruit and are a major dispersal agent for the seeds. Fewer turtles = fewer seeds to be spread = fewer mayapples.

Good photos Lauram! About Polk County, Elvis sang a song, "Polk Salad Annie" any connection?

No, not at all, it is actually Poke salad (pokeweed), or, as it's pronounced here, poke sallat. It's a weed that is very hard to get rid of & poisonous unless properly cooked. I've never eaten it, being a northern girl myself, although it does grow up north.
