The Tree Man Cometh

Should I have left well alone?

After months of agonising and trepidation…….the day (rainy of course) had finally arrived.

At 8a.m. 3 men and a truck load of equipment arrived to shatter the peace of our quiet neighbourhood and wreak temporary havoc in my tidy garden. Yes, the conifer hedge was about tor receive a drastic haircut, the removal of the top 5 foot.
This is an inherited hedge running along the rear boundary some 45’ long and about 9’ thick and despite regular trimming about 15’ tall. Although it gives us and our neighbours great privacy and provides a haven for a multitude of birds it is very overpowering in my rather small garden……but would it look OK or like the butchered specimen down the road?…..Despite repeated assurances from my regular tree surgeon I still felt a bit apprehensive.

After a cup of tea all round and with chain saws and hedge trimmers at the ready, the hedge quaked in it’s roots as work began.

trimming the sides ……..

then cutting a line for the new height……

Remove the the first section and then confer with me if this is low enough……no going back now!

Removing top branches and trunks

All this produced an unbelieveable amount of debris …..here is a minute proportion……and it all had to be carried up the narrow side path to the front garden

Where it met it’s fate in the mincing machine

Almost there with the cutting of the trunks

Unfortunately the top will always be bare but at this height will not be seen

Then the neatening up before the very long and tedious job of clearing the remaining mountain of branches and debris from almost the entire front and back gardens.

Eight hours from start, 3 very hard workers and lots of refreshment means that the hedge that used to look like this….

Now looks like this……

Still fairly tall of course and in need of some summer growth to thicken up the top edge but SO much more light in my garden . All in all a very satisfactory days work.

Why did I doubt it would be OK? Now a few weeks later, I’m totally used to it and wishing I’d been a bit braver and had even more taken off! Oh well …..maybe next year.

The men in pink did a great job by the look of it, it's going to give you more sunshine in the garden now. Have your ears recovered yet from the chain-saw noise ? ! : o )

I can imagine your trepidation in deciding to have such a big job like this done but from your photo`s it looks as if you made the right decision, it looks so much lighter now and you`ve still maintained your privicy. Its so good to see a blog like this as it imparts a lot of useful information to others that might be contemplating the same sort of job. Thanks for sharing Lilly.

Thanks Joanella and yes, lots more light, two truck loads of chippings went off somewhere, not sure if they have to pay to dispose of it or if they sell it.
I think they are really men in washed out red Megan! Not only chain saws and hedgetrimmers but at the back but the chipper at the front...my poor neighbours :o((
Thanks GS, glad you found it interesting.
Hello Sandra I was very worried about the birds too. It was difficult to find a good time for both the trees and the birds. I knew there were blackbirds nesting at the end on the right and the men did find a nest with 4 eggs which they relocated lower down but unfortunately the parents abandoned it and started again in next door. Thank goodness they weren't hatched. Yes I'm OK thanks, taken me nearly a month to do this blog though! x
I really had no idea how they would tackle it Stroller, the one nearby looks awful which is why I was worried but I should have had faith, they've been trimming it for years and always do a great job.

What a good blog, Lily, really interesting.
The hedge looked good before and still does, i understand your trepidation but it's good to see it was all for nothing, the hedge looks perfect !

sent you pm lily x

Looks better we have a great big conifer tree at bottom of my garden that belongs to who ever lives at back of us, but that also as lots of wildlife in it.

They did do a good job, didn't they? I had mine topped at the beginning of the year and that made enough mess!
Pleased to see you about again!

Blimey Lily that sure was some hedge---- and what a transformation!
Good job done by the men and you on the blog .
Your garden looks lovely and even better now you have more light.

Thanks Louise, yes it was OK before - just too big and rather oppressive. It's a little ragged on the top edge close up but that will soon fill out :o))
The birds do love them don't they Clarice, lots of protection from predators although sadly this one will never be as good for them as before now that the top is open.
Hello Ian, I'm pleased to see you too. :o)) The mess was unbelieveable, the huge branches were bad enough but even worse were all the dead pine needles from years gone by....everywhere! But they did a great job of clearing up as usual and really earned their money.
Thanks Val, I'm so glad I had it done, and the blog too. Some of the garden is still very bare, I'm waiting to see if any of the dahlias will come up again, this was the first winter I didn't lift them! :o(((

It looks really good now Lily and it must be lovely having so much more light. They did an excellent job. :o)

28 Apr, 2010

Thanks Sandra, it's much more in proportion with the garden now. It is the north aspect so it has never affected the amount of sun in our garden but yes, SO much more light :o)))

Great job Lily2. We had the tree surgeons in in December and they did a fantastic job. I asked them to leave me the chippings, which they did. I have managed to bag what we did not use and that will be nicely rotted down by the time I want it.

I never thought of asking them for the chippings Scotsgran. On the day I was actually feeling really ill and would have much preferred to be in bed than making endless cups of tea and all that noise but you've got to look after the workers haven't you!

1 May, 2010

I buy chippings from the sawmill on the local estate and it is not cheap although it is a fraction of the cost of the treated bark sold in garden centres. i use it on paths etc first and then add it to the compost bins.

Did this operation cost a lot of money lily2

2 May, 2010

Hello Millie, yes at a quote of £520 I thought so but when I saw how hard they worked and how long it took them, overheads as well, then I thought they had earned it. This included trimming over a Prunus tree as well.

2 May, 2010

Not an unreasonable price, and a great job - huge improvement too, doesn't dwarf the garden now, looks good.

3 May, 2010

Thanks Bamboo, it looks good from both sides but the neighbours at each end both wanted it cut right back to our boundary despite being told that it would be bald and brown forever. Well, it was encroaching so I can see why and they have to look at it not me!

3 May, 2010

that wasnt as expensive as i thought as it now looks great!

4 May, 2010

Just seen your PM, Lily - I thought I didn't remember seeing the final shot before - but yes, you're right, its the action shots, really, lol. Something about men with ropes and tackle...

4 May, 2010

Wats all this? think I might have to agree !

5 May, 2010

Oh not you as well Val, maybe a few secrets coming out here?

5 May, 2010

Oh yes Lily --- Gotcha !

5 May, 2010

And in view of my comments above, I'd just like to point out that I am in, fact, female, despite lots of people on here thinking I'm male, lol

6 May, 2010

Just catching up on things Lily, really enjoyed your interesting blog and it looks much lighter now, maybe you will be braver next time. Or perhaps you want an excuse to have them back more often?:-))

28 Jun, 2010

Sounds like a good plan, Bornagain ...

28 Jun, 2010

And me !

28 Jun, 2010

Well.....yes.....for more reasons than one BA. There's nothing like a couple of action men in your garden but I don't think I'd get approval from the the 'Finance Officer'. :o(( It's OK for you Bamboo and Val, you can both do as you like! Actually the hedge is growing fast outwards so could do with another trim soon........

28 Jun, 2010

It will be cheaper if you have it done more often Lily;-))

29 Jun, 2010

Ah, the joys of being divorced...

29 Jun, 2010

Hear hear Bamboo,---- go on Lily have another trim !
