Dahlias

I thought on this damp and dull day I would brighten things up, so I shall show you the results of my mystery dahlia seeds.

In the summer of 2008 I collected some dahlia seeds from my daughter’s and my garden. They all germinated very quickly and grew rapidly. Now I know, as all the books will tell you, collecting seeds not pollinated by you, will prove a mystery. So from April until July I nurtured them with growing excitement as to what the outcome would be. I certainly wasn’t dissappointed with a huge variety of single, double and pom pom specimens, some of which were outstanding.

Due to illness, I was unable to save the tubers over the winter, but was surprised to seem some of them re-appear this summer, and of course I saved some seeds too. So I shall be sowing again soon and awaiting the outcome this coming summer, along with other seeds I have collected after such a success. So who cares if they do not come true to the parent plant? Some of the specimens produced were much brighter and better than the parents. Got to give myself a pat on the back here, lol

They look great Lizzy. Its very exiting when something comes up from collected seed, and you never know, you may one day find a new variety.

I think it makes a nice surprise when you have to wait and see what the plants turn out like and what a lovely selection of colour, shape and form you got! :-)

brilliant plants for free & superb colours, reward for effort eh? My dad grew dahlias with a passion, I remember these monster blooms big as footballs as a kid. I prefer the smaller single flower types but they are all great plants for the later part of the season.
