Roses in our garden

I’m a sucker for roses! They are dotted all over our garden. From May onwards they provide colour and a lot of scent, starting with this climber…

I’m not good on names, so don’t ask me for the botanicals. I’ve just planted the ones we like the look of. The garden style is roughly ‘cottage’, so we don’t like to see bare earth anywhere. There are no rose beds as such. Many of the roses are the bush type and they sit in herbacious border planting or are underplanted with rockery plants, geraniums, ferns, ivy, lavender, heuchera, etc. I hope you enjoy the pictures…

Little white spider sitting on this one…

We have this rambler climbing over the fence at the back of the garden, sharing the vertical with euonymus, clematis and red jasmine. Looking up the path there is a pollarded eucalyptus (garden rule – no trees etc which can’t be ‘managed’ with a step ladder at most) and a row of cotton lavender plus bedding. At the far end are the all-important compost bins – roses love the home-made compost and grass cuttings mulch, but also get fed chicken manure pellets and bonemeal.
