Yes, you could try that, but I think in this case I'd spray with an insecticide. Do it either early in the morning, or last thing at night so the insects around aren't affected.
Eeeek! I've bever seen so many! :-((

OMG,keep them in Barnsley, and don't bring them to Huddersfield.!.Lol.I've never seen so many either..!
Have you been feeding them with Lager????

Gosh that is one mega infestation and so early as well, because of my fishpond I don`t like to spray so I pour soapy water on mine as soon as I spot the blighters.
A few years ago someone told me to put lavender near my roses as greenfly apparently do not like the smell, I found it worked and the ones near my greenhouse never seem to get greenfly, obviously I am now working my way around placing little bushes near all my roses........

Mark, three of us have said about using soapy water, but to be honest I think I agree with Spritz suggesting an insecticide as this really is bad, I don't personally think soapy water will clear this lot,

I agree with Yorkshire and Spritz. I`ve never seen such an infestation.

Hi all,i am defo going to get some insecticide tomorrow.Lincslass it is funny you should mention about the lavender as i have got three other rose plants .Guess what lavender is close by and they are fine. But how do plant lavender 8ft tall and 4ft wide cause thats how big this investation is on this rose climber. The higher it is the more investation there is.I got a little greenfly last year but not this bad.Thankyou Yorkshire, spritzhenry, bloomer, stroller I am going to try soapy water tonight to try and kill some off.If not i am going to scrape them all into a jar and send them to huddersfield for bloomer lol.NOT .

have you seen any ladybirds we've had dozens this year--they are the best thing.... try to find an insecticide that doesn't harm them if you can... thats why I use soapy water as well....
just a odd piece of often useless information that clutters my mind but did you know that aphids -- in the right conditions-- give birth to live young.....

i use washing up liquid diluted with water to, works great

Best way to shift these is a hard spray of the hose to knock them off or like Yorkshire suggested

I find a garlic barrier spray (organic) is very good too.. had a look at my roses, just in case, but they seem free from them at the moment..hope the wind from Barnsley doesn't blow in this direction..Lol.

hi all thank you very much for your comments all taken into account , thanks again BBFB :)))

The ones on your plant are the rose aphid. Squish as many as you can with your fingers, without hopefully getting thorns in them. I use soapy water too! You could plant orange coloured nasturtiums to climb the rose if it wouldn't look too gaudy, aphids don't like them! Herb tea, is the best, made either with (already mentioned) garlic which seems to work best, wormwood, nettles, or basil.
Pam, those aphids you mentioned giving birth to live young, do so every 10 days, now that is fast!
